Apple investigating AirPod earbud explosion

Florida man says Apple Air Pod earphone blew Apple is investigating why one AirPod caught on fire in Florida

Jason Colon was listening to a dance mix at the LA Fitness on 4th Street in St. Petersburg when he noticed something odd.

'I didn't see it happen, but I mean, it was already fried! "It's the craziest thing I ever went through", Colon told WFLA in an interview.

A Florida man claims one of his Apple AirPods blew up as he worked out at the gym.

The problem with wireless headphones is that they need constant recharging due to the fact that they run on batteries.

In this case, the man showed the AirPods to WFLA, a local TV news station, and the earphone in question appears to have some flame damage and does look severely mangled.

She says she showed them a protective order she had received in 2010 as well as calls to police she had made from their home. Porter, as most know at this point, was accused by both his ex-wives of domestic abuse.

Thankful that he removed the earbuds in time, Colon is now anxious about what could happen to other AirPod owners. "But I'm sure my earlobe could've been burnt".

We've always been largely unimpressed with the quality of Apple's EarPods headphones, and were hoping to see a dramatic improvement in their standard following Apple's acquisition of Beats in 2014. While it's one thing to have your smartphone catch fire while charging, having a device explode while inside of your ear represents a much scarier and unsafe scenario.

This is not the first time that a popular electronic product has hit the headlines for exploding. Note, while Apple doesn't caution against using them at the gym, the AirPods aren't sweatproof and weren't designed for rigorous workouts. Colon said other users should be careful with the AirPods, saying "Just because it happens to me doesn't mean it won't happen again".

A spokesperson from Apple has told the news station that it is investigating the incident to find out what exactly happened.

They're not ideal, but for a first generation product, they're pretty good.
