Nasheed, who is under self-exile in London, has urged India to intervene "militarily" into the crisis.
India is miffed that its concerns and that of the worldwide community about undermining of democratic institutions and the judiciary in the Maldives have been ignored by President Yameen.
Earlier, a section of the Indian media had reported that the President of Maldives was sending special envoys to China, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia to discuss the country's political crisis but had chosen to ignore India. The Maldivian President had recently declared a state of emergency there, much to India's dismay. Refuting such reports, the Embassy of Maldives issued a statement here on Wednesday stating that it was India that rejected meeting the Special Envoy as both Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj were travelling. Among those arrested was former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who had sided with the main opposition.
"Firstly, there is a set protocol to send an envoy".
China, on the other hand, has asked expressed strong reservations against intervention by any of the global powers, insisting the government of Maldives and the opposition should resolve the crisis on their own internally. "It is, therefore, grossly misleading to say that the Government of the Maldives was bypassing India".
"Sadly the Maldivian government refuses dialogue today with my UK/EU colleagues..."
Apart from India, the USA and the European Union have expressed serious concern over the present situation in Maldives.

India has called the government's refusal to abide by the Supreme Court and the imposition of emergency "disturbing" and described the arrest of the judges as a matter of "concern". The court had said that their trials were "politically motivated and flawed".
Saeed was warned he would be "cut into pieces" if he did not overturn the court order releasing political dissidents, the lawyer said. New Delhi had said this should be done in the "spirit of democracy and rule of law".
The tiny island nation has been grappling with a political crisis after the president refused to obey a Supreme Court order to release nine political prisoners and declared a state of emergency. The Maldives has seen political unrest and street protests since Mr Nasheed was convicted in 2015 on terror charges and sentenced to 13 years in jail, while Mr Nasheed himself was earlier granted asylum by the United Kingdom after he was authorised to seek medical treatment there amid mounting foreign pressure.
Nasheed, who is now in Sri Lanka, also urged the United States to block financial transactions of the government led by President Abdulla Yameen.
