NZ ahead of the pack in funding revolutionary HIV-prevention drug PrEP

Publix denies preventative HIV drug coverage to its employees Publix, the LGBTQ-Unfriendly Grocery Chain, Agrees to Cover PrEP After Public Outcry

PHARMAC estimates up to 4000 people with a high risk of contracting HIV will be eligible for PrEP treatment, which has the potential to nearly completely eliminate the risk of HIV infection.

Without insurance, PrEP can cost up to $1,500 a month.

Shay said a lot of people in the LGBT community take Truvada.

After several news stories highlighted that Publix routinely denies employees access to HIV prevention medication and growing outcry on social media, the grocery store chain announced a change of course Tuesday.

New Zealand is about to take a pioneering approach to fighting HIV/AIDS-by publicly funding pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication Truvada, manufactured by USA biotech giant Gilead.

The agency said the decision meant the drug would also be funded for people if they were not infected but their risk of contracting HIV was high. Taking this drug daily has shown to offer more than 90% (and as much as 99%) effective protection against HIV in clinical trials, and certain New Zealand residents will soon be able to get a three-month supply for just $5 (oh, and that's five New Zealand dollars, which is about $3.64 in US money). Since 2015, Fulton County Board of Public Health's HIV prevention program has prescribed Truvada for PrEP 255 times, said Dr. David Holland, chief clinical officer for communicable diseases for the program.

Additionally, point guard Shaun Livingston (personal reasons) and forward Jordan Bell (swollen left ankle) have been ruled out. This is a good opportunity for the Kings to get back in the left hand column against a team that's struggling.

But tomorrow the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) will hand down its decision as to whether PrEP can be added Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

"PrEP is a necessary and urgent tool, and one of a new array of options in the fight to end HIV", Holas said. "Condoms are fully funded on prescription and are highly effective, but rates of HIV infection are still increasing in New Zealand".

The previous highest number of diagnoses was in 2015, when 224 people were diagnosed with the virus.

"For those who struggle with consistent condom use - which can be for a range of legitimate reasons - NZAF is delighted that there will now be publicly funded access to this effective, alternative way of staying safe from HIV for those who need it".

Gay and bisexual men remain the population group most at risk.

About 3500 people in New Zealand are now estimated to be living with HIV.
