Google acquired Nest about four years ago, but it kept the company at arm's length.
Seems that's about to change.
Google hopes to combine Nest'ssmart thermostat and camera products and services with its own devices. In other words, they're rolling Nest under the Google/Alphabet umbrella after all. It's responsible for products like the Pixel and Google Home. For instance, the two were reportedly developing a software product with similar functions and the same name, Weave. The specialties and working areas of the giant have been technology, life sciences, and research, but despite its many subsidiaries like autonomous auto developers Waymo, and healthcare unit Verily, everything has been masterminded by Google, who now calls upon the services of Nest.
The product of choice that is now dominating the smart home is smart speakers, with Google and Amazon accounting for 94 percent of the devices in use, according to Strategy Analytics Inc. Originally, Nest was supposed to be the core of Google's hardware efforts, but instead Google made a decision to create a separate division to produce its Nexus, Pixel, Chromecast, and Google Home devices.
It certainly makes sense for Nest to merge with Google's hardware group, especially since the two are already working together. The market is only getting more crowded. As of now, Apple is the least of Google's problems as the former is essentially a newbie in the field with its Siri-powered HomePod speaker just about to roll out.
The integration with Google doesn't make clearer what role energy efficiency will play in Nest's future business. It wasn't the first phone-connected thermostat to ever reach stores, but the first-gen Nest Learning Thermostat dazzled folks by offering a fresh design on a typically-utilitarian product. Wednesday's announcement cites security, energy, cost-savings and hands-free assistance as some of the reasons to buy into the smart home ideal.
