According to ESPN, the three-year deal is worth $24 million with a team option in the third season. The Clippers were interested in keeping Williams long term due to his increased performance when the team asked him to be the focal point of the offense while many players were sidelined with injuries.

Williams, 31 years old in his 13th National Basketball Association season, is enjoying a career year with the Clippers, averaging 23.3 points per game after the team acquired him in last summer's Chris Paul trade.

"Sweet Lou" quickly became a fan favorite and gained a significant amount of attention during the All-Star voting period, as multiple experts and fellow players argued that Williams' deserved an All-Star nod.

The Clippers and Pistons play Friday in Detroit for the first time since the trade.

He is having, by far, the best scoring season of his career with 23 points per game and has out-performed his previous best scoring average from a season ago when it was in the neighborhood of 18 points per game.

The market will likely intensify for the Memphis Grizzlies' Tyreke Evans with Lou Williams off the market. But after exploring trade scenarios for the free agent-to-be, seeking a first-round pick or younger prospects, Los Angeles was ultimately unsatisfied. There is a large possibility that the big man will be ending the season as a Clipper.

Williams came over to the Clippers from the Rockets as part of the trade that sent Chris Paul to Houston.

Williams - one of the top trade candidates on the market - had been in discussions for over a month on an extension with the Clippers.

The 31-year old Williams is in the last year of his contract and is making $7 million this season.

The Clippers have been on the hunt for draft picks, as made clear by their decision to move Blake Griffin.
