'I'd love to see a shutdown' if Dems don't back immigration deal

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would welcome a federal government shutdown if Congress is not able to agree to changes in immigration law that he said would prevent criminals from entering the country.

Senior White House adviser Stephen Miller listens as President Trump speaks during a meeting with lawmakers on immigration policy in the Cabinet Room of the White House on January 9, 2018. Why not sidestep the most incendiary disagreements and target the two main areas on which there is broad bipartisan acceptance: protecting "dreamers" brought to the United States as children and beefing up border security? Yes, he has offered a path to citizenship for 1.8 million dreamers, but Democrats are highly unlikely to support his quid pro quos, which would not only crack down on illegal immigrants but also slash legal immigration to levels unseen in decades - a policy goal that was never part of Trump's rhetoric as a candidate.

In a tweet Monday, Trump called the measure a "total waste of time". But that deadline is fast approaching, and such a deal does not seem imminent. Democrats agreed to the short-term bill in exchange for a promise from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to Democrats that he would bring an immigration bill to the Senate floor by February 8.

Though Trump has repeatedly promised that DACA recipients have nothing to worry about and that he'll be handling them "with heart", he's had no problem using them as bargaining chips for his wall after putting an end to the program last September.

The White House panned the immigration proposal Graham touted along with Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin of IL, which included a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients.

Coons said Trump's push to limit legal immigration based on families is the "most divisive and difficult" of his proposals.

He also wants to curb legal immigration, restricting the relatives that legal immigrants could sponsor for citizenship and ending a lottery that distributes visas to people from diverse places like Africa.

Republicans release new Russian Federation memo, taking aim at Steele's credibility
On Monday morning, Trump took aim at Schiff, accusing him of being "one of the biggest liars and leakers in Washington ". But Republicans and the president have said the FBI's methods were troubling and the public should be informed.

Trump Says: 'I'd Love To See A Shutdown' If No Immigration Law
But it is narrower in scope than a plan Trump put forward last month, which was resisted by hardline Republicans and Democrats. McCain is seeking to placate Democrats in order to get full funding for the military.

NYC officials: Stay home if you have the flu
In a press conference , NY officials said they did not yet have information on adult flu-related deaths. She was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, where she was diagnosed with influenza.

That stalemate has led many to believe the likeliest outcome is a narrowly focused bill or even no legislation at all.

During a conference call with reporters, Coons said he was alarmed to hear some senators now talking about simply putting off long-term decisions about Dreamers for a year and making some "modest investments" in additional border security.

He reportedly made some other colorful remarks.

A Republican in the House, Rep.

The senators' proposal is similar to a bipartisan House package by Reps.

Aides and lawmakers say budget talks in the Senate are moving toward an agreement for whopping increases in Pentagon spending as well as domestic programs. Will Hurd, R-Texas and Pete Aguilar, D-California, which has 54 co-sponsors - 27 Republicans and 27 Democrats.

Rep. Joseph Crowley of NY, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, denounced Trump's address as "racist", while House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi complained that although Trump "presents himself as generous" toward Dreamers, he's "holding them hostage" in what she calls the "most extreme anti-immigrant agenda in generations". Hurd and Aguilar, who first described their bill to CNN, have said they intentionally did not seek to appropriate specific funds in their proposal, as neither are on appropriations committees.
