India's longest range missile Agni 5 is all set to be inducted into the armed forces, a top defence ministry official has told NDTV.

The test was the new weapon's final operational configuration, bringing it one step closer to being a deployable warhead in India's land-based ballistic missiles arsenal. "This successful test of Agni-V reaffirms the country's indigenous missile capabilities and further strengthens our credible deterrence", said a defense ministry official, according to the Times of India. Agni 5 has been made by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

"It becomes very obvious from the perspective that, yes, India has got two adversaries, Pakistan and China, and both of them are nuclear weapons state and both of them have missile capability".

Once inducted, India will join an elite league of nations such as the US, UK, Russia, China and France. India took 10 years to develop Agni 5, a feat that took most other countries over 15 years.

The Agni-V was launched from Wheeler Island off India's east coast and hit its target area off the coast of Indonesia about 20 minutes later.

Created to carry a 1.5- tonne nuclear warhead, Agni-V has been tested four times in "developmental or experimental trials" earlier.

Tensions between India and China spiked past year when the two countries were involved in their most serious confrontation in decades along a strategic Himalayan plateau where India accused China of building a road that would make it easier to access its territory.

Agni-5's range is also less than half that of North Korea's recent launches and nobody expects it to lob missiles at any of those locations, because it's a stable and peaceful democracy that generally observes worldwide laws.
