Ken Clarke was the sole Tory MP who sided with the rebels.

The government has faced a battle to get the bill through the House of Commons, with a number of amendments put forward. It suffered an embarrassing defeat last month after a group of 11 rebel Conservative MPs voted against the government to ensure Parliament secured a meaningful vote on the terms of the final Brexit deal.Since then, the European Union and Britain have agreed to move onto the with the next round of talks focusing on a transitional deal before moving onto future trade and security relations between the parties.

The vast majority of Labour MPs voted against the bill tonight.

"The analysis confirms that if we are to mitigate the impact of Brexit we must stay in the Single Market and Customs Union".

The UK Government says the measure is necessary to avoid disruption of the UK's internal market and insists that it continues to make "good progress" in discussions with the Scottish Government.

Scottish Conservative MPs observed the government whip voting against Labour's amendment to Clause 11 of the bill which was meant to preserve powers previously devolved to both Holyrood and Cardiff.

It was passed by 324 votes to 295 - a majority 29 - and now faces a major battle in the Lords at the end of month.

The Conservative Party has urged its MP's to show unity in today's key vote on the EU Withdrawal Bill, which gets its third reading in the House of Commons before heading to the Lords.

"This bill has never been fit for goal", said Labour's Brexit policy chief, Keir Starmer, describing any attempt to persuade the government that the legislation needed to change as "talking to a brick wall".

A spokeswoman for the UK Government said: "Every part of the United Kingdom needs a functioning statute book, and that applies as much to Scotland as elsewhere".

Keir Starmer, Labor's shadow Brexit secretary, described the bill as not fit for goal, filled with a number of defects.

"The Government has not accepted any of the points that the opposition have made: they have conceded some ground on their own side - they have not taken seriously the propositions and the arguments that we have put forward on this side and that is unusual in my experience of dealing with Bills".

Eleven members of May's Conservative party joined with opposition lawmakers last month to force a change ensuring that parliament will have a "meaningful vote" on the final withdrawal deal.
