Goldman Sachs' David Solomon, who was allegedly swindled by his wine assistant, at an event in Washington, D.C., on October 10, 2017. He was arrested Tuesday night in Los Angeles and expected to appear Wednesday in federal court there.
De-Meyer was responsible for collecting wine sent to Mr Solomon's Manhattan apartment and taking it to the cellar at his property in Long Island's prestigious Hamptons district. Instead, De-Meyer allegedly called himself "Mark Miller" and sold hundreds of bottles to a North Carolina wine dealer out of the Manhattan apartment. "The theft was discovered in the fall of 2016 and reported to law enforcement at that time", a Goldman spokesman said in an email. They talked about possible prosecution, Rivas said Wednesday, and Solomon wouldn't guarantee that the Federal Bureau of Investigation would not be involved. De-Meyer, who had worked for Solomon from 2008 to 2016, had admitted to his boss he took the wine during a meeting with him and his wife at a Manhattan hotel that November, the day before he fled the U.S.
The wine in question includes bottles from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, an estate in Burgundy, France, court documents show.
Nicolas DeMeyer was charged with interstate transportation of stolen property. He was found out in 2016, fired, and then promptly left the country. From 2014 to late 2016, Mr. De-Meyer sold bottles valued at more than $1.2 million, the authorities said. "For example, in October 2016, De-Meyer stole from [Solomon] seven bottles of DRC wine that the victim had previously purchased for $133,650".
