Carlos Ciuffardi and Paola Podest, two LATAM flight attendants flying from Santiago, Chile to the northern city of Iquique, had a spontaneous inflight wedding. Protesters carried signs with messages reading "Burn, pope!" and "We don't care about the pope!"

According to journalists traveling with the Pope, the couple - Paula Podest and Carlos Ciuffardi - went to the Pope during the January 18 flight to ask for his blessing.

The couple never had a ceremony in a church.

There's never a tiresome moment with the whirlwind that is Pope Francis, who has many times labeled the pope of firsts: Onboard the Airbus 321 going from Santiago to the northern city to Iquique in Chile, he married a couple that asked for his blessing. Ignacio Cueto, owner of the airline company, LATAM, was a witness in the ceremony.

Ciuffardi told journalists in the aisle of the Airbus 321 that Francis told him it was "historic" and no pope had ever before married a couple aboard a plane.

According to a report by Reuters, Pope Francis said on Monday he was really afraid about the danger of nuclear war and that the world now stood at "the very limit".

Podest told reporters and the pope that the couple had met on a flight when she was his boss, adding: "I am still his boss".

"Francis' words in favor of the foreigners who live here are needed, differences must be respected", said 22-year-old Monserrat Caballero, from Ecuador. However they said they were unable to follow up with a church ceremony because of the 2010 natural disaster that hit Chile.

"You can not assert yourself by destroying others, because this only leads to more violence and division", the pope said, speaking before thousands of faithful at an airfield in Temuco, the capital of the southern Araucania region.

In a trip that has been less than positive for Pope Francis, there was a bit of a shock.

When the pope asked for a witness, they tapped the CEO of the airline, and to make sure there was no doubt over the validity of the sacrament, the pope "asked the cardinals who were with him" to draft the license, which they did.

The trials and difficulties of immigrants trying to keep their families together had left many feeling like "their lives had been watered down", he said as 50,000 people faced the stage and the ocean.

Rosset, the Vatican press office said, voiced his appreciation of the Chilean Catholic Church for "its great work in promoting and defending human rights".
