Authorities are investigating this as a hate crime.

An assailant, in two attempts within 10 minutes, cut Khawlah Noman's hijab using scissors while she was walking to school with her brother, a Toronto police spokesperson said.

She said, "Someone insulted me by cutting my hijab". Khawlah said she noticed the scissors the suspect was carrying had a blue handle.

"I screamed. The man just ran away".

Local police told reporters that when the man tried to cut Noman's hijab the first time she had turned and confronted him, making loud noises to scare him off and then she ran away with her little brother.

"I felt really scared and confused", she said during a press conference on Friday at the school.

Khawlah Noman is a sixth grade student at the school.

In her 20 years as a cop, Sidhu said she had never heard of somebody trying to cut a girl's Hijab before.

They were walking northbound on Birchmount Ave. toward Pauline Johnson Junior Public School - north of Sheppard Ave. E.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the attack after speaking at a cabinet retreat in London Ont

Speaking at the podium, the girl's emotional mother told reporters she was "happy that she's safe", and said the community has been supportive of her daughter.

"I certainly hope that the Toronto Police Services are able to track down the person who committed this violent act and my thoughts and prayers are with the family", Scheer said.

Norm Kelly, the area's city councillor, responded to the incident by saying there was "no place in Canadian society for hate crime - whether large or small", adding, "I'll be asking my followers to send any tips they may have to police".

"She was fearless enough to confront the man, make some noise. and then proceed to walk with a bunch of other kids realizing there's safety in numbers", said Const. Jenniferjit Sidhu. "I am a kid".

"This is going to require a very holistic approach - at the school level, at the government level and at the community level".

In response to Noman's harrowing account of the attack, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that he "can't imagine how afraid she must've been". But the man came back just as Kahawlah was waiting for her brother who was stopped at a light across the street.

"This is a cowardly act of hatred, and it has no place in Ontario", tweeted Premier Kathleen Wynne. "This is not who we are". "We must stand firm in our support to this young girl who was assaulted simply for wearing a hijab".

Toronto's mayor added that he was "shocked and appalled".

"No child should ever be afraid walking to school in Toronto because of what they are wearing or for any other reason", he said in a statement.
