Former world number one Angelique Kerber's early season resurgence continued in fine style on Saturday, with the two-time Grand Slam champion beating Ashleigh Barty to claim the Sydney International title- her first title since the 2016 US Open.

Elsewhere, Elise Mertens defended her Hobart International title after a 6-1 4-6 6-3 win over Mihaela Buzarnescu.

Having defeated such class opposition will provide Kerber with great confidence tonight, and Barty will have to produce her best tennis to stop the German in her tracks.

"It feels very good to win my first title in my first tournament this year".

A BROKEN Angelique Kerber choked back tears last November after losing to Ash Barty in the Chinese city of Zhuhai, exhaling: "I'm so glad this year is over".

Barty tipped Kerber to be one of the major contenders in Melbourne.

In the second set Kerber broke at 3-3 before running out the match for her first title since the 2016 US Open.

Gavrilova, Australia's second highest-ranked woman at No.25 in the world, was left frustrated by her errors, notably one of seven double faults serving into the net twice at 4-all in the second set. "I was working hard in the last few weeks", Kerber said.

"Every match will be tough, but first of all, I will just be enjoying today, the title, and then from tomorrow I will be thinking about Melbourne".

The 21-year-old Barty fell to 1-3 in career finals, winning her lone title last year at Kuala Lumpur. The Australian, playing in front of her home crowd, rallied slightly and broke straight back to get back on level terms, though was broken again at 2-2 and was unable to even up this time.

"But overall, I think I'm on the right path and playing good tennis. Hopefully, I can go bigger and better next week". Angie is on fire. They now share a 1-1 head to head record against one another, with the Australian defeating Kerber in straight sets in China previous year after losing to the German earlier in 2017 in Brisbane.

The German endured a tough campaign past year, but appears close to recapturing her best form, claiming a title to begin the season with a 6-4 6-4 win over Barty.
