The former minister was pushing to stay in her education brief and was unwilling to accept a different job offered to her by the Prime Minister.
The Cabinet changes - at least two secretaries out and seven officials promoted - are May's first major effort to refashion her top team, after months of speculation about her future. It was reported that Greening made a decision to go after refusing May's offer as Works and Pensions Secretary.
Despite May claiming the reshuffle ensures the Government "looks more like the country it serves", just six of the 23 Cabinet Ministers are women, and only one comes from a non-white ethnic group.
Speaking after his departure, Sir Patrick said: "I have been in the Cabinet for eight years and I have had a very good run".
They added: "What is important is producing a government that can deliver on the priorities of the British people and deliver social mobility".
Greening, who is seen as on the modernising wing of the Conservative party, was praised by the party's leader in Scotland, Ruth Davidson, and backbencher, Heidi Allen.
