Kobach says canceling Trump voter panel will actually speed up investigation

US President Donald Trump talks with journalists after signing tax reform legislation into law in the Oval Office Election-law expert: Feds do have right to states' voter details

The Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity raised alarm bells when its vice chair Kris Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state, sent a letter to all 50 states asking for sensitive information on all registered voters.

A White House statement blames many states for refusing to provide information to the commission, and The Dispatch reports Ken Blackwell, the former Ohio Secretary of State who served on the panel, blamed "a wall of resistance" from Democratic officials.

Donald Trump established the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity previous year with the ultimate aim of finding evidence of alleged illegal ballots being cast which lead to his loss of the popular vote to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016.

The decision comes after a federal judge partly agreed with Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, in his lawsuit against the commission. They asked all 50 states and the District of Columbia to hand over personal voter data including voters' names, voting histories and party affiliations.

Kobach says he'll work as an adviser for homeland security as the investigation moves forward. It failed to find any evidence of the millions of illegal voters claimed by President Trump.

The bugaboo of widespread voter fraud has been an excuse by red states to push through unjustified new voter identification laws.

"In responding to the commission, we will have ideas on how the federal government can better support states in running elections", Husted said in June.

Trump has never demonstrated that millions of people voted illegally, as he has often claimed (Clinton won the popular vote by almost 3 million).

Mr Trump launched the voter fraud commission after having claimed, without any evidence, that "millions" of people had voted illegally and he would have otherwise lost the popular vote (his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, outpolled him by about 2.8 million votes). "These prosecutions will help deter voter fraud in the future". "System is rigged, must go to Voter I.D.", he tweeted. It calls for transparency from the commission but applauds states that defy requests for public information.

The panel was heavily criticized by Democrats, who said it was a tool for Republicans to suppress minority voter turnout.

When the commission sought information on New Mexico's voters, including social security numbers and addresses, Toulouse Oliver denied the request.

"This commission was a sham from the start and everyone recognized it", Dale Ho, the director of the ACLU's Voting Rights Project, said in a statement.
