South Africa's graft-tainted president Jacob Zuma on Tuesday announced a probe into corruption at the highest levels of the state after parliament indicated it would this week deliberate procedures for impeachment.
"The allegations that the state has been wrestled out of the hands of its real owner‚ the people of South Africa‚ is of paramount importance and are therefore deserving of finality and certainty‚" Zuma said in a statement.
The announcement comes after the North Gauteng High Court's judgment of 14 December past year, which ordered Zuma to appoint a commission of inquiry within 30 days.
I urge everyone to cooperate with the commission of inquiry.
Similar sentiments were expressed by President Zuma during his announcement of the appointment of the inquiry.
"The matter can not wait any longer", he said, adding: "I have made a decision to appoint a commission of inquiry".
