Hungry Wawrinka ready for Australian Open

Serena opts out of defending Australian Open title: not convinced she would win Serena Williams To Skip Australian Open 2018
Frederick Owens | 12 January, 2018, 19:20

Williams, defending champion has withdrawn from the 2018 Australian Open, saying she is not ready to return to tournament tennis.

The three-time Grand Slam victor has previously confirmed to take part in the 2018 Australian Open, but after his withdrawal from the Mubadala World Tennis Championships in late December, there were still some doubts.

"I'm really, really happy to be back on the Tour and seeing the sun", said the 32-year-old Swiss. "The Australian Open is her favourite tournament and she's looking forward to returning to Melbourne next year", tournament director Craig Tiley said.

He pulled out of an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi late last month before travelling to Australia to prepare for the Open.

The Australian Open has been hit hard by absences with Andy Murray, Serena Williams and Kei Nishikori among those to have withdrawn, while Nadal and Novak Djokovic have also been struggling with injuries.

Australian Open and the organisers received a huge boost in terms of star power with Rafa Nadal and Stan Wawrinka already in Melbourne and their respective knees looking good ahead of the tournament.

Wawrinka is scheduled to play in the exhibition Tiebreak Tens event at Melbourne Park on Wednesday and tournament director Craig Tiley said it was welcome news the three-times Grand Slam victor was eager to get back on court.

She had been in doubt for Melbourne Park after pulling out of last week's Auckland Classic. Azarenka played only six matches in 2017 and her year-ending ranking plummeted to No. 208.

She also said that her team and coach always said that she should only go to tournaments when she is prepared to finish the tournament till the end.

"It was a good test for me and good practice", said Nadal after the match, in which he appeared to be moving freely, if not a little rusty in his shot-making.
