Honda Insight Detailed, Gets More Than 50 MPG Combined

As expected from a new Honda, the 2019 Insight will come with a host of technology features.

The 2019 Honda Insight is expected to be officially launched later this year, though auto enthusiasts will not have to wait until then to get a good look at this new automobile.

Inside the new Insight, there will be optional perforated leather seating.

The design looks a lot like that of the 10th-generation Civic, though Honda describes the new Insight as an "upscale" 5-seater positioned above the Civic, meaning the vehicle should be bigger than the Civic and better appointed.

There's no hybrid in this FC generation of Civic, so the new Insight will play that role. Customizable app tiles, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto are also featured, with Honda further confirming over-the-air software updates via Wi-Fi. According to Honda, the new Insight is a full five-seater; and, because its batteries are located under the floor, the boot is a good size, and can be extended thanks to 60/40 split rear seats.

On the safety front, Insight will include Honda LaneWatch on EX and above and Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety technologies as standard equipment, including Collision Mitigation Braking System, Lane Departure Warning, Road Departure Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow and new Traffic Sign Recognition.

On the other side of the high street, it was a similar story for Marks & Spencer, this morning's worst performing FTSE 100 stock. That compared with analysts' average forecast of a 3.4 per cent decline and a second-quarter fall of 0.1 per cent.

The real star of the show, however, is the car's 2-motor hybrid system.

After launching the 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid with the latest version of the two-motor hybrid system, the brand recently released the 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid in Canada, while in the United States, hydrogen fuel cell and fully electric versions of the The Clarity are offered as well.

Inside, Honda is promising best-in-class passenger space, along with a more upscale cabin than most compact cars. In the 2019 Insight, it uses a 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine for its internal combustion component.

Honda says the Insight will offer "class-leading" power, but does not define what that is. Therefore, if Honda fully implements this drivetrain in the new Civic-based Insight, which is likely 700-800 lbs. lighter, performance should be robust.

Defining characteristics: Honda expects the Insight to get a combined EPA fuel-economy rating above 50 mpg. No word yet on whether there will be a plug-in version.

The production model is expected to go on sale in the USA in the summer of 2019, but at the moment there are no plans to offer the Insight in Europe as the next hybrid Honda has planned is a CR-V Hybrid.
