The handset doesn't have a name yet, but the collaborator in question is Synaptics. The Verge compared the device as being somewhat similar to the OnePlus 5T.

Android Headlines did point out that the fingerprint sensor requires the display to be active when unlocking, which might come as a disappointment to those who were hoping that they can use the biometric technology without waking the display.

Commenting on the development, Alex Feng, Senior Vice President, Vivo disclosed that the showcase of the in-display fingerprint technology is a step in the right direction.

Synaptics - the company responsible for handling the touch input on millions of laptop trackpads and smartphone screens - announced in December 2017 that it has started mass production with its first optical in-display fingerprint sensors. Hopefully we in India will see it sooner. Before 2017 ended, Synaptics finally introduced the Clear ID in-display sensor.

So how does it work?

We have always been hearing about fingerprint sensors embedded in the smartphone's display and it seems they are finally ready for primetime. It's located at the bottom portion of the smartphone.

So, do you prefer the comfort offered by an in-display fingerprint reader or the security of 3D facial recognition technologies?

CES 2018 : Vivo Displays Fingerprint Scanner On Smartphone Display

Fingerprint scanners have been one of the most preferred way of authentication on smartphones, sitting either on the front or the rear of the smartphone.

Users can press the fingerprint graphic on the screen to perform unlocking, payment, and other operations. The print will then run through an AI processor to identify it, as described by CNET.

The Chinese brand, ranked by IDC as the third largest smartphone vendor in China after Huawei and Oppo, believes it has solved the challenge of providing a better and more convenient fingerprint authentication system for smartphones.

Samsung was rumored to be working on the same technology past year for the Galaxy S8 and S8+. The placement of a fingerprint scanner on the back is even worse.

Today vivo confirmed rumors from yesterday and showcased the device in Las Vegas, becoming the first company in the world to implement the technology in a smartphone. The Vivo unit we used the scanner on had a Samsung-built display but Synaptics tells me the module can be easily incorporated into any OLED panel, so expect to see it cropping all over the place in the near future.
