Meltdown and Spectre: All Macs, iPhones and iPads affected

Meltdown and Spectre: All Macs, iPhones and iPads affected Meltdown and Spectre: All Macs, iPhones and iPads affected

Spectre is one of two security flaws that were discovered in chips last week, which affect numerous devices running Intel and ARM components.

There is no evidence these flaws have been exploited.

Mac users have often believed that their devices and operating systems are less vulnerable to security issues than, for example Android phones or computers running Microsoft systems.

2018 kicked off with a bang security-wise due to the announcement of the serious Meltdown and Spectre flaws found in processors widely used by a wide range of computing devices and smartphones. The bug seems to affect multiple devices on the market including almost every Apple device.

Getting back to the updates, iOS 11.2.2 is available for the iPhone 5s and later models, iPad Air and later models, as well as the iPod touch 6th generation. Apple Watch was unaffected by Meltdown and Spectre.

As for macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 Supplemental Update, it includes security improvements to Safari and WebKit to mitigate the effects of Spectre. Apple macOS users still on Sierra and El Capitan should also update Safari to the latest version to protect against this flaw. Needless to say, this is an important update and everyone should download and install it right now without giving it a second thought at all.

Which leaves me wondering about those hundreds of millions of Android users, many of whom have been neglected for years without seeing hide nor hair of a security update.

"Brian's sale is unrelated", said Intel in a statement.

Guidance from U.S. cyber-security project CERT, which is funded by the federal government, originally advised computer users that in order to fully remove the vulnerability they would have to "replace" processor hardware.
