Dr. Khorana along with two other scientists - Robert W. Holley and Marshall W. Nirenberg - were bestowed with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1968 for "their interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis".

Har Gobind Khorana's interest in science began as a young boy under a tree in a small Indian village and lead to helping to decipher the genetic code. Har Gobind Khorana is known for extensive research on DNA. Thankfully, his father encouraged him in following his dream and getting education.

He had served on the faculty of the University of British Columbia from 1952 to 1960, where he initiated his Nobel Prize winning work.

Khorana conducted research at universities in England, Switzerland, and Canada.

A second scientific breakthrough would come a few years later when Khorana reported construction of the first artificial gene, which are widely used in biology labs for sequencing, cloning and engineering new plants and animals. Khorana also became an expert on the chemical synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids.

He received a host of awards during his lifetime, including the National Medal of Science. The amino acid sequences of these proteins then solved the rest of the puzzle to win the Nobel Prize for him.
