For now, Consumer Reports' food safety experts are advising that everyone stops eating romaine lettuce until the cause of the outbreak is identified.

Because there still appears to be a risk of infection, the Public Health Agency of Canada says consumers in affected provinces should consider eating other types of lettuce until they have more information, such as where the lettuce came from and where it was sold.

In Canada, one person has died and 17 have been hospitalized.

"People in these groups should be particularly vigilant about avoiding romaine lettuce", Rogers said.

Genome sequencing is being performed on bacteria samples making people sick in the United States to provide information on whether the illnesses are related to those that occurred in Canada. Morrison said until more is known about the source and cause of the contamination, it is best to avoid romaine lettuce. But does this mean you should skip the romaine on your sandwich or in your salad?

A new warning has been issued by Consumer Reports to avoid romaine lettuce while US and Canadian health officials continue their investigation after 58 people were reported sick from E. coli infections, NBC News reported.

But Chapman was less certain about this recommendation. "It could be that there's a different [food] source of this exact same pathogen", he said.

While there have not been any cases of E. coli 0517 in P.E.I. linked to romaine lettuce, Chief Public Health Officer Dr.

It's certainly possible that the two outbreaks could be the same, but USA officials say they need more evidence to make that conclusion.

So far, the CDC has not found any food item common to all those who have become ill - including romaine lettuce.

Officials will also sequence the whole genome of the E. coli involved in the US outbreak, to determine how closely related it is to the strain in Canada. Here government health officials are still investigating the outbreaks and have made no suggestions regarding romaine lettuce consumption.
