FCC Repeals Net Neutrality Rule

Tech giants' net neutrality legal challenge FCC Repeals Net Neutrality Rule

Several states including NY, and public interest advocacy groups have said they intend to sue to stop the mid-December ruling by the Federal Communications Commission.

A lobbying group comprised of dozens of the biggest technology companies announced that it is planning to file a lawsuit against the Federal Trade Commission over the gutting of net neutrality rules.

Specifics of the threats haven't been revealed, but federal law enforcement agencies have "intervened" in the matter, and other FCC offices are expected to be briefed on it.

The cancellation comes hot in the heels of the regulator's repeal of net neutrality in the USA in December 2017 - prompting speculation that Pai would have been greeted with a hostile reaction at the conference from the largely pro-net neutrality tech industry.

The group's leader, Michael Beckerman, said that the dismantling of net neutrality "defies the will of a bipartisan majority of Americans and fails to preserve a free and open internet".

He adds that along with the intervenor actions, member companies will push for a more permanent legislative solution.

Etsy called the decision to overturn net neutrality rules "deeply disappointing".

A Nebraska lawmaker introduced a bill Friday to restore rules preventing internet service providers from slowing your ability to binge television shows on Netflix or blocking search engines that aren't Google. This isn't the first threat to be directed at Pai in recent weeks: The vote to eliminate net neutrality was interrupted by a bomb threat that was ultimately determined to be a hoax.

The decision has also been met with a fair amount of criticism from users over concerns that the repeal may allow ISPs to abuse their position and deteriorate internet access to smaller sites that may not be able to pay for "fast lanes".
