The deal, reached in December 2015, was a major diplomatic achievement for former president Barack Obama, committing nearly every country in the world - 195 in all - to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases, a cause of climate change.

As expected, Nicaragua has signed on to the Paris climate agreement, which sets a planet-wide goal of keeping the global average temperature well below 2°C above the pre-industrial age.

President Trump announced he would be withdrawing the United States from the Paris climate change agreement at the beginning of June, calling it "unfair".

Climate scientists have said warmer air and water resulting from climate change may have contributed to the severity of the storms.

The move leaves the Trump administration in the company of Bashar Assad's Syria as the only two governments on earth that refuse to take part in the Paris deal, which was negotiated by the Obama administration and formally signed in December 2015. Some environmentalists have suggested the country focus on climate adaptation rather than mitigation. It is a country that is believed to be especially at risk from climate change.
