Clinton campaign, DNC paid for research that led to Russia dossier DNC, Clinton Campaign helped pay for anti-Trump dossier: Reports

President Trump on Wednesday used the news that Hillary ClintonHillary Diane Rodham ClintonChris Murphy's profile rises with gun tragedies DNC, RNC step up cyber protections Gun proposal picks up GOP support MORE's presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee funded a dossier of allegations about his ties to Russian Federation as a means of attacking it, calling it a "fake dossier" and questioning the credibility of the federal probe into Moscow's interference in the 2016 election.

"'Clinton campaign & DNC paid for research that led to the anti-Trump Fake News Dossier".

US news media, led by The Washington Post, are reporting that a Washington lawyer, Marc Elias, who represented Clinton's campaign and the national political organization, hired Fusion GPS, a Washington firm, to conduct the research at a time that Clinton and Trump were locked a tight contest for the presidency that Trump eventually won.

Former British spy Christopher Steele compiled the dossier for the opposition research firm Fusion GPS.

Trump on Wednesday said he thinks he knows which Republican might have been behind it.

Former Bush White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said the new revelations reek of collusion between the Hillary campaign and the Russians in an effort to interfere in the 2016 election.

Citing Fox News, Trump tweeted Wednesday morning, "Clinton campaign & DNC paid for research that led to the anti-Trump Fake News Dossier".

Still, the president and his supporters have seized on the new details about the DNC-Clinton role to push their view that the various Russian Federation investigations - from Capitol Hill to Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller - are based on a fraudulent, politically inspired hit job. The DNC and Clinton campaign engaged Fusion in April to "perform a variety of research services during the 2016 election cycle".

Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen is heavily featured in the dossier and appeared Tuesday before a closed hearing of the House Intelligence Committee.

The dossier has become a lightning rod amid the intensifying investigations into the Trump campaign's possible connections to Russian Federation.

Washington Post reporters Tom Hamburger and Rosalind S. Helderman explain the story behind a controversial dossier on President Trump.

The Kremlin campaign included hacking the DNC's computer systems, releasing pilfered communications to WikiLeaks to publish them, and a sophisticated overt propaganda and disinformation campaign.

US intelligence agencies later released a public assessment which asserted that Russian Federation intervened in the 2016 election to aid Trump.

When the Republican donor stopped paying for the research, Elias, acting on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the DNC, agreed to pay for the work to continue. The FBI and the Central Intelligence Agency have said with high confidence that the effort was aimed at hurting Clinton's candidacy and helping Trump. They described him as a Fusion GPS subcontractor.

Experts concluded that the contents of the dossier included allegations that were regarded credible by the USA intelligence community. Around that time, Steele shared some of his findings with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The firm's founder, Glenn Simpson, had previously given a 10-hour interview to the Senate Judiciary Committee. The committee subpoenaed Fusion's bank records in an effort to learn who paid for the research.
