Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation agency says more than 57,000 people have now fled the surrounds of Mount Agung because of the risk of a major eruption.

Of course, Indonesia, with more than 100 active volcanoes, is no stranger to preparing for the increased seismic activity.

That they're showing signs of erupting at the same time is pure coincidence, said Benjamin Andrews, of the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program.

Thousands of cows are also being evacuated.

Referring to the potential eruption, Emile Jansons of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology told the Sydney Morning Herald, , "It might be a very explosive one, it could be a weak eruption that lasts for a long time, and it's also entirely possible that it just stops".

The last eruption was recorded in 1963, Mount Agung has been slowly building up to an eruption since August.

This is official information from the government, which has, itself, evacuated more than 80,000 residents from the immediate area.

Mount Sinabung on Sumatra, an Indonesian island 2,250km from Bali, has been erupting periodically since 2010, belching a kilometres-high cloud of ash that has forced over 30,000 people to evacuate. More than 1,700 people were killed and many villages destroyed.

While there are plentiful stocks of food, water, medicines, and other supplies, evacuees fear they are in for a long wait that could disrupt their livelihoods.

Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport is the second-busiest in the country, after Jakarta's main international airport.
