Twitter Is Testing 280-Character Tweets: Too Much, Too Late?

Twitter Twitter trials new 280-character tweet limit

The company has published figures showing that 9pc of users tweeting in English reach the 140-character limit compared to just 0.4pc of Japanese users. She puts it this way, "when people don't have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people Tweeting - which is awesome!" "Most Japanese tweets are 15 characters while most English tweets are 34".

It's true that some languages allow each character to count for more. For instance, early previous year, after reports surfaced that Twitter was planning to make its timeline algorithmic, ranking popular tweets first instead of listing them in chronological order, there was an outcry of users who pledged to abandon the service.

This balancing act between keeping Twitter's base happy and innovating on some of its core features may also have been one reason why the company tried to justify its new tests with a number of internal data points. It remains to be seen whether this is enough to placate staunch defenders of the 140-character limit, or whether Twitter instead stumbled upon a way to offend even more people with these tests. It appears that, at least for now, the company is sticking to the Twitter-means-brevity script that has been with it from the very beginning.

Twitter's product manager Aliza Rosen said: "We want every person around the world to easily express themselves on Twitter, so we're doing something new: we're going to try out a longer limit, 280 characters, in languages impacted by cramming". Still, the company said it is open to revisiting the subject of expanded tweets for Asian languages as it learns more.

Though I hadn't seen any recent scuttlebutt that Twitter might be ready to make this move, the only surprising thing about this it is the timing.

The 140-character limit was originally established to reflect the length of SMS messages, which was how tweets were distributed prior to the development of mobile apps.

Cowboys players, including Jerry Jones, kneel before national anthem on MNF
In the past, he has said he liked how the Cowboys had handled the national anthem. "Fire or suspend!" Trump tweeted early Sunday. The Cardinals players felt strongly about doing something after comments made by President Donald Trump late last week.

Twitter has hinted at expanding the character limit in the past, only to backtrack when users protested.

Twitter explained that in Japanese, Korean and Chinese, people can convey twice as much information as languages like English and Spanish.

Interestingly, this isn't a problem everywhere people Tweet.

One of the biggest changes in the history of Twitter.
