A McDonalds worker in the United States faces attempted murder charges after she gave birth to a baby girl in the restaurant bathroom - then tried to flush her newborn baby down the toilet, prosecutors say.

4, Sarah Lockner, 25, was allegedly working an evening shift at the fast-food restaurant when she made repeated trips to the restroom, citing stomach pain.

When the co-worker entered the bathroom to check on Lockner, prosecutors said, there was blood on the floor.

"The employee stood up to look above the stall and saw a newborn baby in the toilet with her hand on his back, pushing him down into the toilet water."

The witness subsequently heard the toilet flush after looking away, but it's not clear whether Lockner was attempting to flush the baby, according to Wagstaffe.

Around 10 p.m. Lockner's boss told her to go home but she never left the restaurant.

That co-worker called 911, and when paramedics and police arrived Lockner was holding the baby in her arms, but it was not breathing and didn't have pulse.

The infant was placed in a medically-induced coma at the hospital and has since been taken out of the coma.

Lockner is accused of attempted murder, causing great bodily injury and assault on the child causing great bodily injury.

Wagstaffe told KTVU the crime against the child was heartless and soulless and the boy only survived by the grace of God.

It has suffered brain damage, the severity of which is not yet known, according to the LA Star. Lockner reportedly claimed that she was just having a "heavy period".

"I still can't believe it", another neighbor, Miguel Contreras, said.

She appeared in San Mateo County court on Wednesday for felony arraignment where her bail was set at $11,000,000.
