Essential Phone High-End Modular Accessory Will Revive Beloved 3.5mm Audio Jack

Essential Phone Now Available in Sprint Stores Essential Phone is getting a 'high-end' audio accessory with a headphone jack

When the debut Android phone from Andy Rubin's Essential was revealed last month, it was made clear that Sprint would be the only carrier in the U.S. to sell the device.

However, Essential will be offering up a new high-end audio accessory for that magnetic connector that will bring the 3.5mm headphone port back to the mix. Word of the new audio accessory came directly from Andy Rubin when he was in a Reddit AMA recently. He went on to say that the company is now working on a "high-end audio accessory" that will bring back the 3.5mm headphone jack into the Essential Phone.

While plenty of smartphone features have been sunsetted on the way to thinner profiles and sexier bezels, none have garnered the ire of consumers quite as much as the removal of the aged and distinguished 3.5mm headphone jacks. We studied it very seriously, but fitting a headphone jack into our Phone required tradeoffs we were uncomfortable with. The company is promising to release a total of six magnetic accessories for the Essential Phone, which includes the new 360-degree camera. We'd have grow a huge "chin" in the display and reduce the battery capacity by 10 person, or we'd need a huge headphone bump!

In response to one of the questions asked by users, Rebecca Zavin, Essential's VP of Software was quoted as saying, "We are excited about supporting 3rd party developers". We decided it was more important to have a lovely full-screen display in a thin device with solid battery life.

The Essential team also confirmed that Essential Phone owners will receive an update to Android 8.0 Oreo within two months.

The Essential team members revealed information related to some additional accessories that the Essential Phone would soon be getting.

The Essential Phone arrived late last month running Android Nougat.

The camera is arguably the handset's weakest spot, and it's good to see that Essential has acknowledged this. The Pure White model was reported to be undergoing build trials and would be released in a few weeks.

As for the non-black versions, it looks like customers will have to wait some more.
