Russian Federation to work on trilateral projects with North & South Korea

Ellis Copeland | 08 September, 2017, 01:45

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said pursuing further sanctions against North Korea is "useless", saying "they'd rather eat grass than give up their nuclear programme". This was on the sidelines of the 2017 summit held in Xiamen, Xinhua quoted the Washington Post.

He condemned North Korea's latest nuclear test on Sunday, calling it "provocative".

The demand contradicted the stance of their host, Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has dismissed sanctions as a solution. (But) ramping up military hysteria will lead to nothing good.

Putin also warned of the consequences if the US forges ahead with what he said is the same ineffective strategy.

Amid escalating tensions in the Korean Peninsula, South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday asked his Russian counterpart's cooperation in urging the worldwide community cut off crude oil supplies to the North Korean regime. He expressed support for Russia's Energy Super Ring plan, which aims to build energy links between its Far East and Asia Pacific region, saying it would help the creation of "the world's largest energy community".

Abe, when speaking on Russian television, stressed that effective negotiations could be conducted "only with the person whom you trust".

Mr Tillerson, who helped establish the biggest USA oil company's presence in Russian Federation in the 1990s, met then-premier Putin for the first time in 1999 on the remote Far East island of Sakhalin, where Exxon has a major project.

But speaking at the closure of the BRICs summit in Beijing - which hosted the leaders of Brazil, India, China and South Africa - Putin said that while Russian Federation condemned North Korea's latest actions, imposing any kind of sanctions would be "useless and ineffective". Kim Jong Un's regime on Sunday claimed "perfect success" in an underground test of what it called a hydrogen bomb. President Donald Trump said the latest provocation reinforces the danger facing America and that "talk of appeasement" is pointless. Kim had seen how western intervention in Iraq had ended in the overthrow of Saddam Hussein after which the country was ravaged by war, Putin warned, and was determined not to suffer the same fate.

South Korea, Trump said, "is finding, as I have told them, that their talk of appeasement with North Korea will not work, they only understand one thing!"

Since the Korean War, Beijing has avoided prodding North Korea to the point it might collapse, fearing a destabilizing economic blow and the possibility of the USA military gaining influence on its border via a unified Korea.

"We cannot kick this can down the road any longer", Halley also said at the special United Nations meeting. South Korean President Moon Jae-in is seeking to boost his country's military strength to include nuclear-powered submarines.
