Donald Trump on Deal with Democrats: 'Everyone Was Happy … Not Too Happy'

The Latest House passes $7.9B Harvey disaster aid package Donald Trump on Deal with Democrats: 'Everyone Was Happy … Not Too Happy'

Republican Party leaders were "shell-shocked" and "visibly annoyed" after President Donald Trump and Democratic congressional leaders announced a mutual agreement to raise the debt ceiling and fund the federal government until December, the media reported.

The meeting was created to discuss legislation to provide relief for Hurricane Harvey, raise or suspend the debt ceiling, and fund the government past the end of September.

The deal fit neatly with what House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wanted, but not what Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell or House Speaker Paul Ryan were looking for.

Relations between Trump and Republican leaders have always been strained by policy disputes and the president's jabs on Twitter. Until Wednesday, that hasn't happened. But the Democrats held fast as the Republicans dropped their request to twelve months and then to six months.

To keep it from happening, Democrats need Republicans, but they also need Trump, and some are hoping his comments and actions on Wednesday are a positive sign.

"I think that's a ridiculous idea", the Wisconsin Republican said about the idea proposed by Democratic leaders, adding that a short-term debt limit increase would not benefit people in Texas and Louisiana who have to deal with the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey.

"We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer", Trump told reporters on Air Force One on its way to North Dakota. "We agreed to a three-month extension on debt ceiling, which they consider to be sacred". Mr. Trump doesn't care that Republicans don't want to vote twice on debt ceiling or the budget. But the president sided with the Democrats, agreeing to only a three-month deal. GOP congressional leaders at the meeting, as well as Trump's own treasury secretary, wanted a longer period for the debt limit extension. And with Hurricane Irma barreling toward Puerto Rico and Florida, more disaster aid is likely to be needed quickly. Just over an hour earlier, Ryan had accused Democrats of playing politics with America's credit. "They win the politics of DACA and leverage on debt in the winter".

President Donald Trump infuriated Republicans on Wednesday by agreeing to ease USA borrowing limits, forestalling a government shutdown and siding with opposition Democrats in a high-stakes Washington policy fight.

It's unlikely that this particular accord signals an age of bipartisan bonhomie in Washington.

Trump also expressed optimism that Congress could forge a deal on undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S.as children.

Then there was DACA, which Trump was impelled to address in some fashion after several attorneys general threatened to sue the administration if it didn't act to wind down the policy by September 5.

"He fucked us", a senior Republican official said to Axios AM on Thursday morning.

The House handled the Harvey package Wednesday under a parliamentary tactic known as "suspension", which allows members to sidestep debate and other procedures if the measure can pass with a two-thirds majority.
