North Korea conducts fresh missile launches

The spokesman also said none of the missiles posed a threat to North America, or to Guam, the nearest USA territory to North Korea.

The test "shows an advance in capability", says The Times because the "missiles were 300-millimeter rockets fired from a multiple-tube launcher".

North Korea's state media earlier Saturday said that leader Kim Jong Un inspected a special operation forces training of the country's army that simulated attacks on South Korean islands along the countries' western sea border in what appeared to be in response to the ongoing U.S. He said US forces "continue to monitor North Korea's actions closely".

The missile tests occurred as the United States and South Korea conducted the annual Ulchi Freedom Guardian military exercises.

North Korea's last missile test on 28 July was for an intercontinental ballistic missile created to fly 10,000 km, which would put parts of the United States mainland within reach, and prompted heated exchanges that raised fears of a new conflict on the peninsula.

They are taking place at a time of high tension on the Korean peninsula following inflammatory rhetoric between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and USA president Donald Trump.

The South Korean and USA militaries are in the midst of the annual Ulchi Freedom Guardian drills, which the North routinely describes as preparation for invasion, that involve computer simulations of a war to test readiness and run until 31 August.

One appeared to have blown up nearly immediately while two flew about 250km in a northeasterly direction, Pacific Command said, revising an earlier assessment that two of the missiles had failed in flight. The North routinely says it will never give up its weapons programmes, saying they are necessary to counter perceived USA hostility.

The US State Department has not commented on the launches.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump issued an extraordinary ultimatum to North Korea, warning Pyongyang not to make any more threats against the United States or it will "face fire and fury like the world has never seen." "I respect the fact that he is starting to respect us", Trump said of Kim. Saturday's launch comes during an annual joint military exercise between the United States and South Korea that the North condemns as an invasion rehearsal, and weeks after Pyongyang threatened to lob missiles toward Guam. "The second missile launch appears to have blown up nearly immediately", said Commander Dave Benham of the U.S. Pacific Command.

"The military is keeping a tight surveillance over the North to cope with further provocations", the South Korean defence ministry said.

Kim reportedly told his troops that they "should think of mercilessly wiping out the enemy with arms only and occupying Seoul at one go and the southern half of Korea".

Solid fuel missiles are faster and easier to deploy, and harder to catch before they launch because there's a lot less to be done in terms of launch preparation.
