Ramil Guliyev Ruins Wayde Van Niekerk's Double Dream

Ramil Guliyev from Turkey has caused a boilover by winning the men's 200m at the world athletics championships in London, denying South African superstar Wayde van Niekerk a golden double.

Guliyev, who is a member of Turkey's Fenerbah├že sports club, finished the race in 20.09 seconds, ahead of South African Olympic champion Wayde van Niekerk, who took silver in 20.11 seconds.

Makwala had become the folk hero of London 2017 having been excluded from both the 400m and 200m heats when the IAAF medical commission placed him in 48-hour quarantine after deciding he showed symptoms of norovirus.

In the final, Makwala brought the crowd to its feet as he led marginally going into the finishing straight.

"Maybe at the next competition, everyone will look at me instead".

Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago was given the same time but was relegated to third by one thousandth of a second.

The 27-year-old Guliyev, who had never won a medal in a senior global event, finished just the stronger to triumph in 20.09 seconds before setting off on a lap of honour carrying the flags of both of his nations.

There were a few boos from the packed-out London Stadium crowd as Guliyev streaked through the line ahead of Van Niekerk, thousands immediately upping and leaving rather than savouring the winning moment which ruined the South African's bid to match Michael Johnson, the U.S. track legend who won the double at the 1995 Gothenburg worlds and went on to repeat the feat a year later in the Atlanta Olympics.

London Tube station evacuated amid reports of smoke
Passengers posted photos of smoke pouring out of a Bakerloo Line train on social media as thousands of commuters were evacuated. The Daily Telegraph reported that a witness said the smoke was spreading, tweeting: "There has been some fire at Oxford Circus".

"I'm still disappointed. If I got a medal in the 200m it's going to be better so now my 100 per cent chance was in the 400m".

"This is not a shock", said the champion. I think it's great for my career and another moment to be grateful for.

"I was competing against some of the best athletes in the world, so it didn't bother me that the attention was on them", he said.

"I work just as hard as every other competitor". Nelson Evora of Portugal bagged the bronze in 17.19.

American Kori Carter upstaged her heavily-favoured countrywoman Dalilah Muhammad to claim gold in the women's 400m hurdles from the outside lane. The two-time Olympic champion won with a leap of 17.68 meters. A collection of medals from the Mediterranean Games, the Summer Universiade and the Islamic Solidarity Games did not mark him down for glory and even his silver at last year's European Championships came when most of the continent's top talent had skipped the event to concentrate on the Rio Olympics.

Ristananna Tracey of Jamaica came through to take the bronze medal in a personal best time of 53.74, ahead of defending champion Zuzana Hejnová of the Czech Republic.

"When I got into the race I was feeling good, but the last 50m I was feeling exhausted".
