The across the nation manhunt for an OH assault suspect, who overwhelmed a sheriff's appointee and got away, finished on Monday night when the man's body was found in a crawlspace in his parent's storm cellar.

Police in OH had been hunting for 32-year-old Branden Powell from Antwerp, after he overpowered a prison officer on Friday (4 August), snatched his gun and escaped. Authorities say Powell was in a crawl space and shot himself as officers were trying to persuade him to surrender.

Powell was arrested and booked July 8 on allegations of rape, a first-degree felony.

Landers said last week Powell was armed and unsafe.

After getting into a struggle with the officer, Powell stole the duty's gun and handcuffed him to the steering wheel, police said. Powell was being transported back to Paulding County Jail from Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital in Toledo. The statement continued by saying this was certainly not the outcome officials had hoped for but went on to say the community can now rest, knowing the armed individual is no longer a danger to them.

A manhunt for a suspected rapist who escaped during a prison transfer has ended after he killed himself. Paulding Deputy Robert Miller was transporting Powell when the escape occurred.

Agents from the FBI, US Marshals and the Ohio State Highway Patrol are now assisting local authorities with this search.

The FBI, US Marshals and Ohio State Police are now assisting in the search effort.

About 7 miles northeast of Paulding, on Road 133 south of OH 111, Powell scaled over the seats in the transport vehicle and put the deputy in a headlock, causing the vehicle to crash into a ditch, then a struggle ensued.

Closed-circuit television cameras from moments before the escape showed Powell walking next to the deputy. But he said the transport van "doesn't have a cage in the back" and Powell probably "wouldn't have been able to get to the driver if there (were) a barrier".

The US Marshals offered a $2,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of Powell.

Then Powell fled with a.40-caliber pistol and 30 rounds of ammunition, Landers said.
