Arrest Warrant Issued for Professor in River North Murder

The two men surrendered peacefully in California after eight days as fugitives and one appeared in court Monday.
Lathem and Andrew Warren, an Oxford University financial officer, were on the run for more than a week before they surrendered Friday to authorities in Oakland and San Francisco.
Lathem's attorney has said he will plead not guilty to the charges. The July 27 attack was so violent the blade of the knife believed to have been used in the stabbing was broken, police said. Authorities have not said when that will happen.
The Chicago Tribune reported that blood was found on a bedroom door in the apartment where Cornell-Duranleau was found dead from stab wounds.
They did not offer a motive for the slaying and have not released much information about how the three men were connected - aside from revealing that the victim had been living with Lathem in his apartment.
Authorities' primary target in the investigation has been Lathem, who had been on Northwestern's faculty since 2007.
Wyndham Lathem, who was a faculty member at Northwestern's microbiology-immunology department for 10 years, was terminated effective August 4, Alan Cubbage, vice president for university relations, said in a statement Monday. Published in top scientific journals, he was a sought-after speaker on pneumonic and bubonic plagues.
Lathem is banned from entering the Northwestern University campuses, the statement added. Also, Lathem reportedly sent an apologetic video to friends and family members. Lathem was under intensive observation Saturday in jail, Alameda County Sheriff's Sgt.
Investigators talked with Lathem's friends during the week, including people from his graduate and undergraduate days, along with his colleagues.

Ed Ferrell, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals office, said Warren was arrested in San Francisco, while Lathem surrendered at the federal courthouse in Oakland after communicating with authorities. Durenleau, who was a licensed cosmetologist, grew up in MI and just recently started living with Lathem.
A funeral will be held August 12 in Lennon, Michigan.
It is suspected that Lathem had a personal relationship with Duranleau but police have not disclosed details on that relationship. Lake Geneva police said the man making the donation did not give his name.
Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Frank Conroy told The Associated Press the telephone negotiations began late Friday afternoon and by evening, Lathem arrived by auto at the courthouse. His court appearance is Monday in the city of Pleasanton.
The 42-year-old Lathem is being held without bail in Alameda County.
