Earlier, Israel announced that it was removing metal detectors at the sensitive holy site in occupied East Jerusalem in a bid to defuse escalating violence.

Amid global concern over the rising tensions, the office of the Israeli prime minister said on Tuesday that it would replace the detectors with "advanced technologies and other means".

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said some cameras remained "as part of the security measures to prevent terror attacks" in and around the Old City.

He was referring to the site, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, which is central to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They were outvoted by the ministers who heard briefings from the IDF and Shin Bet warning of near-catastrophic consequences if the situation on the Temple Mount were not returned to what it was before the July 14 attacks, meaning without the metal detectors or cameras.

Palestinians still continued their protests and refused to enter the mosque with the surveillance cameras installed.

The UN warned Monday that the crisis over new security measures at a volatile Jerusalem holy site must be swiftly resolved, as a top USA official arrived in Israel to try to ease tensions.

There were many other threats of holy war against the Jews incited not just by Palestinians, but also by other Muslim leaders around the world.

"Yes there have been Israeli guards outside the compound, but it is under Palestinian control within the compound, with Palestinian guards - so our stance is that putting any kind of new administrations on the ground will give Israel new control over the mosque, which is what the Israelis have always wanted, and what we will not accept" he said.

The Sunday shooting, in which an Israeli guard killed two Jordanians after one attacked him with a screwdriver, had briefly led to a diplomatic standoff. At least five Palestinians have died in clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police over the security measures.

Israel officials said the country made a decision to replace the metal detectors with "smart", less obtrusive surveillance means - but Palestinians rejected the new measures, calling for a return to the status quo before July 14.

Palestinians said the placing of the metal detectors upset the status quo, which Israel has repeatedly pledged to maintain.

There was widespread anger in Jordan over the shooting, given the unpopularity of its peace deal with Israel.

Livni says that tactical differences over security measures at a Jerusalem holy site have deteriorated into something far worse and Israel has to stop this.

President Reuven Rivlin said in a statement, "After a long and tense few days, I want to welcome back home the staff of our embassy in Jordan".

Fearing violence against its diplomats, Israel sought to have its embassy staff, including the guard, quickly leave Amman and return to Israel. Today, a poll of Israelis suggests that most already think Israel folded when it removed the metal detectors.

The crisis erupted last week, after Israel installed metal detectors at the compound following a shooting attack that killed two policemen.

But on top of the outbreak of violence mainly in the Jerusalem area, a Palestinian move on Friday by President Mahmoud Abbas to suspend official contacts and global criticism put pressure on Israel.

Considered the third holiest site in Islam, it is the most sacred for Jews.

Still, for Palestinians, the issue of installing cameras on the entrances to the al-Aqsa Mosque compound is yet another manifestation of Israeli control over the holy site.

Jordan's ruling Hashemite dynasty draws much of its legitimacy from its role as protector of the holy site.
