OJ Simpson Moved to New Cell for Protection

Simpson bowed his head and appeared to be in tears as the board voted unanimously to grant him parole, then stood and thanked the commissioners repeatedly, hands clasped. Simpson has so far served nine years and will have a parole hearing today in which case, the former Heisman trophy victor could walk free. Pardo defended the former football great and celebrated the Nevada parole board's decision Thursday to grant Simpson parole after he served almost nine years in prison for armed robbery and kidnapping at a Las Vegas hotel in 2007.

CNN anchor John Berman asked Pardo why he'd laughed when questioned about the "conflict-free" remarks, prompting Simpson's longtime friend to say with a chuckle, "I could see how people could take that the wrong way, you know, if you go back into the murders and all of that".

The former prosecutor said Simpson took a gamble when he rejected an offer to avoid trial by pleading guilty to a felony that could have gotten him 2½ years in prison.

During Thursday's hearing, the charisma and charm that once made Simpson one of the most popular figures in American pop culture was clearly on display.

After getting released, Simpson plans to move to Florida, a state with a strong law that would shield his home and everything in it from seizure to satisfy the verdict.

Simpson is expected to reiterate that he has kept a promise to stay out of trouble, coaches in the prison gym where he works and counsels other inmates.

He chuckled Thursday after the comment from Connie Bisbee, chairwoman of the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners, and said, "Thank you, ma'am".

"He is a good man". His defenders have argued, too, that his sentence was out of proportion to the crime and that he was being punished for the murders he was acquitted of in Los Angeles in 1995, the stabbings of ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

In 1997, Simpson was found liable in civil court for the two killings and ordered to pay $33.5 million to survivors, including his children and the Goldman family.

The long prison sentence that resulted from the hotel-room stickup brought a measure of satisfaction to some of those who thought Simpson got away with murder.
