The icon's final credit as a writer was for Day of the Dead in 2017. His other zombie movies include Day of the Dead (1985), Land of the Dead (2005), Diary of the Dead (2007), and Survival of the Dead (2009). This icon has been battling lung cancer and has finally gone home.

Romero's longtime producing partner Peter Grunwald confirmed the news to the Los Angeles Times Sunday.

Romero created "Dawn of the Dead" 10 years later, which film critic Roger Ebert called "one of the best horror films ever made - and, as an inescapable result, one of the most horrifying". The film became another global hit and was the first feature of special effects guru Tom Savini, who would go on to work with Romero throughout his career.

The movie was rare at the time of its release in that it starred an African-American actor in the lead role.

Romero leaves behind a legacy that very few can match as only a handful of creators loom as largely over the horror genre. The infectious bite. Shoot the head. The movie, snubbed by the mainstream press, became a smash hit among horror aficionados and gore lovers. He is also the reason why he found meaning in monsters. "I find that this is still going on today". Thank you. I love you.

The legacy of Romero's film was an inspiration to other directors within the genre, like John Carpenter of Haloween fame, and it also produced a series that spanned almost five decades.
