Fast bowler Amir gets PCB's category A contract

UNFIT FOR THE JOB Umar Akmal was sent back from England after he failed PCB-prescribed fitness test twice during preparations for the Champions Trophy and that seems to be the most probable reason for him to miss out on a central contract this year. Pakistan's star fast bowler Mohammad Amir was promoted into the country's top category Wednesday following his brilliant Champions Trophy performance, just 19 months since returning to global cricket after a five-year spot-fixing ban.

The PCB have given 35 contracts for the year starting from 1 July 2017 and came in four categories.

The Central Contracts were awarded after keeping in mind the performances, fitness, and discipline of the players.

Akmal was sent back home from England in May after failing a fitness test ahead of the Champions Trophy. Imad Wasim and Hasan Ali have also earned promotion from C to B category. While Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan were included in the tally, Umar Akmal and Mohammad Irfan were axed from the list.

Pakistan have dished out central contracts to 35 of the nation's leading players, with a strong emphasis on youth.

In March 2017, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also announced central contracts for Indian players, dividing into three categories, A, B and C.

Amir, who was in category B a year ago, was promoted to category A. Batsman Babar Azam, fast bowler Hasan Ali and allrounder Imad Wasim jumped to category B from C, while opening batsman Ahmed Shahzad moved one step up to category C. At the same time, Babar Azam and Imad Wasim, two of Pakistan's most exciting young cricketers, moved up from "C" to "B".

Category C: Wahab Riaz, Rahat Ali, Haris Sohail, Sami Aslam, Shan Masood, Sohail Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Junaid Khan, Ahmed Shehzad, Mohammad Abbas and Shadab Khan.

The Annual Retainer amounts were enhanced for all the categories.
