Kerber, who was beaten by Serena Williams in last year's final, is known for her fighting qualities and needed to show all of them to beat Rogers in two hours and 17 minutes.

However, the world No.1 Kerber kept faith with her error-filled game plan to seal victory when Rogers, ranked 70th in the world, belted a service return long.

The 2015 runner-up at the All England Club and 2016 French Open champion beat Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-2.
