A Fort Bliss soldier has died in an attack in Afghanistan, the military said Wednesday. Hansen B. Kirkpatrick, 19, of Wasilla, Alaska died from wounds received during an "indirect fire attack" and the incident is under investigation. Further details were not available.

Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis said the soldiers had been conducting an off-base operation with partnered Afghan security forces when they came under fire.

The Trump administration is considering adding several thousand troops, largely in a training and support capacity, to the pared-down USA military presence in Afghanistan. The rapid deterioration of security in Helmand prompted USA commanders in February 2015 to rush a small, "expeditionary advising package" including US troops to stop the downward spiral, and it has since expanded to include hundreds of conventional US soldiers and Marines.

According to a statement by Pentagon "The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Freedom Sentinel".

"We are not winning in Afghanistan right now, and we will correct this as soon as possible", Mattis told lawmakers on the Senate Armed Services Committee on June 14. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.) - warned that patience among the US public for the 16-year war could run out without a well articulated strategy.

Kirkpatrick's death brings the total number of US casualties in Afghanistan for this year to seven.

Pentagon chief Jim Mattis is expected to present President Donald Trump this month with a revamped Afghanistan strategy aimed at breaking a stalemate with the Taliban. The attack, presumably by Taliban fighters, occurred in Helmand province's Nawa district, and also caused injuries to two other USA soldiers who are expected to survive, Davis added.

Now about 8,400 United States troops are in Afghanistan along with about 5,000 North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces.
