The Vatican's paediatric hospital stepped in after Pope Francis called for Charlie's parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, to be allowed to "accompany and treat their child until the end". The hospital had offered to transfer Charlie to their facilities from Great Ormond Street Hospital in London (UK), where the child and his family are now staying.

But little has changed for baby Charlie, who suffers from a rare genetic disease that has left him brain damaged and unable to breathe unaided.

President Trump has offered to help a terminally ill British baby. Hospital specialists have said the experimental therapy won't help. His parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, challenged the decision but lost their battle when the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) refused to intervene, effectively confirming that the machine could be turned off.

Mr Trump took to Twitter to express his support, saying: "If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the United Kingdom and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so".

British royals to bring the kids along on European tour
Like they did with their Canada tour, they'll most likely bring along nanny Maria Borrallo to help with the children. At two months of the school year, this will also be the last time they will be able to go on a trip this year.

Successive legal attempts to allow his parents to take him to the U.S. for experimental treatment failed as judges in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court in London ruled in favour of GOSH doctors, while the European Court of Human Rights declined to hear the couple's appeal. They remain at Charlie's bedside and his condition remains stable'.

The Vatican children's hospital studied whether it was possible for Great Ormond Street to transfer Charlie to Rome. "Two of the most powerful men in the world want to give Charlie Gard his chance". British courts have ruled that Charlie should be taken off life support as further treatment would prolong his suffering.

Trump tweeted his support, writing: 'If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the United Kingdom and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so'.

On July 2, the pope addressed a message to Charlie's parents via spokesman Greg Burke, stating, "The Holy Father follows with affection and emotion the affair of little Charlie Gard and expresses his closeness to his parents". At issue is whether universal healthcare means that bureaucrats and judges will determine appropriate treatment, or whether parents like Charlie's with the energy, finances, and physicians to care for their child will be allowed to do so.
