Spain: Poor English may have caused bungee-jumping death

Spain: Poor English may have caused bungee-jumping death Spain: Poor English may have caused bungee-jumping death

A teenager in Spain died after thinking she heard her bungee instructor say "now jump", when he was meaning to say "no jump".

A 17-year-old Spanish girl fell to her death after she bungee jumped off a bridge without being tied to anything.

The fatal jump occurred in August 2015 at the 105-foot-high viaduct of the A-8 freeway over an arroyo near Cabezon de la Sal, about 50 miles west of Bilbao in northern Spain.

Vera Mol is said to have mistaken the instructor's saying "no jump" as "now jump" due to his "very bad" English, as The Metro reported on Monday.

The instructor, who has not been named, has now appeared in court accused of causing the Dutch teenager's death.

Vera's death could have been avoided had the instructor used the phrase "don't jump", the court heard, which is reportedly the correct terminology, according to the Daily Mail.

The company's appeal filed a year ago said that the teenager jumped before the instructor allowed her to.

The appeal judge added that the instructor's level of English was not sufficient to be guiding foreigners in "something as delicate as jumping into the void from an elevated point", The Telegraph reported.

Mol was a novice at bungee jumping, and she was the last in her travel group to make the attempt.

Dutch girl dies during bungee jump.

Flowtrack, who run the bungee jumping company that employed the man, said it was an accident.

The jump involved leaping from a bridge over a highway in the northern region of Spain while attached to an elasticated bungee rope, but it was to take a tragic turn when Vera stepped up to the ledge.
