President Reassures Qatar of Support

Sandy Vega | 28 June, 2017, 04:18

On Friday, the emirate was presented with a 13-point list of demands to end the crisis that included shutting down the Al Jazeera news network, cutting ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, and curbing diplomatic relations with Iran.

The list of demands Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations issued to Qatar last week will be hard to meet, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Sunday.

"We consider these demands are against global law", Erdogan was quoted as saying in Istanbul by the state-run Anadolu Agency.

In a statement, spokesman Huseyin Muftuoglu referred to an agreement signed in 2014 between Turkey and Qatar as proof that Turkish efforts to set up a military base in Qatar had nothing to do with the ongoing crisis among the small Gulf state and other Arab countries.

UAE's foreign minister said on Saturday there would be a "parting of ways" with Qatar if it failed to meet the demands.

They also imposed a trade blockade of Qatar, a travel ban on Qatari nationals, and even deported 15,000 Qatari-owned camels from their summer pastures in Saudi Arabia. He urged them to "lower rhetoric" to ease tensions.

He called on the Arab countries to "sit together" with Qatar to work through what he hoped would be "reasonable and actionable" demands.

"To ask Turkey to pull out its troops from Qatar is firstly disrespectful behaviour towards us", he said in Istanbul, according to Reuters.

Then Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Libya, and several other countries broke diplomatic ties with Qatar over allegations that Doha is sponsoring terrorism.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut air, sea and land links with Qatar three weeks ago.

They accuse Qatar of backing terrorism - a charge it denies.

The Qatari emir extended his congratulations on Eid al-Fitr, and said, "Qatar has open arms for interaction and cooperation".

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday denounced the list of demands, rejecting their request to close its military base in Qatar.

Congress has never voted in favor of stopping a foreign military sale that's been formally notified - the latest attempt was a close 47-53 vote that failed to block a $500 million sale to Saudi Arabia - but the committee leaders have been able to play a role in stopping or delaying arms sales.

"Some of them will be hard for Qatar to incorporate and to try to adhere to", Nauert stated.

The blockade of Qatar is "unacceptable" and Tehran's policy is to strengthen ties with Doha, Iran's state-run Islamic Republic News Agency cited President Hassan Rouhani as saying on Sunday.
