A 31-year-old man on a jihadist watchlist rammed a auto loaded with guns and a gas bottle into a police van on the Champs-Elysees on Monday (Tuesday in Manila) but inflicted no casualties, in the latest of a string of attacks in Paris, sources said. The assailant died in the incident, although investigators offered no immediate details about the cause. There were no other casualties from the attempted attack, and no group claimed responsibility.

"Security forces have been targeted in France once again", Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said, calling the incident an "attempted attack".

Questions arose on Tuesday over how a known radical Islamist who rammed a vehicle laden with weapons and gas canisters into a police van on Paris's Champs-Elysees was able to hold a firearms licence.

The 33-year-old man, who did not succeed in injuring any officers, was "known to the police and thought to be radicalised", said a source.

Collomb said Monday's attack justified further extension of France's "state of emergency", a heightened security and surveillance regimen that has been in place since November 2015, when Islamic State militants carried out coordinated attacks on a concert hall and cafes across Paris, killing 130.

However, several more attacks have occurred since, with the bloodiest on Bastille Day previous year in Nice where a man drove his truck into a crowd, killing 86 people.

Second landslide stalls rescue efforts in China as almost 100 remain missing
Experts quoted by Chinese media say that natural disaster may have weakened Xinmo's mountains, which collapsed after rainfall. The order was issued after radar detected shifts in the ground where the mountains collapsed early Saturday, Xinhua said.

Monday's incident came less than a day after a vehicle attack on Muslim worshipers outside a mosque in north London.

Mr Brandet said bomb squads were still securing the scene. "There will be deaths", before two of the soldier's comrades shot the attacker dead.

France remains in a state of emergency and on high alert over possible terrorist attacks due to its military intervention in Syria, Iraq and the Sahel region.

The incident on one of the French capital's busiest shopping and tourist districts rattled the city anew after multiple attacks targeting security forces. The man was from a suburb in Paris and had been previusly flagged for extremism, French police said. Investigators, however, found more weapons and explosives inside the vehicle.

"You could tell when you saw them in the street that they were very religious", he said.

The interior minister said he would be introducing a bill on Wednesday at a cabinet meeting to extend the state of emergency from 15 July, when it is set to expire, until 1 November.
