Germany: don't expect Turkish bodyguards at G-20 Germany: don't expect Turkish bodyguards at G-20

Ebru Turhan, a political scientist at the Turkish-German University of Istanbul, said the apparent decision by Germany to bar these guards from attending the summit is indicative of a recent period of intense mistrust between the two countries.

"Some foreign security services of the Turkish delegation did not abide by the law and therefore those people are not welcome in Germany for the foreseeable future", he said.

Schaefer wouldn't confirm or deny an unsourced report in the Welt am Sonntag newspaper that his ministry made clear to Turkey the bodyguards weren't welcome. "This is what our Turkish partners also know".

CNN reports that the neither the Turkish Foreign Ministry or Erdogan's office have given them a comment. Monday and Tuesday are public holidays in Turkey.

Erdogan met President Donald Trump at the White House to hold talks aimed at improving strained ties.

In May, Turkish security officials ignored USA police and attacked a group of Kurdish protesters following a meeting between Turkish and US presidents in Washington, D.C.

Other videos also showed bloodied protesters on the ground.

Germany banned symbols earlier this year connected with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a Turkey-based party and named terrorist organization in Turkey and Europe.

The charges against some members of Erdogan's security detail came after a May 16 skirmish during his visit to the United States capital last month in which nine protesters were injured outside the Turkish ambassador's residence. "What kind of legal system is this?"

Germany's chief federal prosecutor in January launched an investigation into possible spying by clerics sent to Germany by the Turkish government, and in March opened a second, unrelated probe into suspected espionage. At the time, German media reports said the Turkish Intelligence Agency (MIT) was suspected of spying on supporters of USA -based cleric Fetullah Gulen, accused by Ankara of organising a failed coup last July.

Germany's warning to Turkey comes amid significant security concerns around the G20 summit next week.

Schmidt, who has been closely involved in planning in Hamburg, said between 50,000 and 100,000 protesters are expected across two days of meetings, as well as the days leading up to the start of the conference July 7. Eight thousand left-wing extremists are expected to be among them.
