The mayor of southern USA city Atlanta, Kasim Reed, said he wanted to send a signal of "optimism, passion, and action" on fighting climate change to mayors worldwide after Trump announced the pullout this month.

President Donald Trump's pullout from the Paris climate accord has triggered a bipartisan push from United States mayors to stick to the emissions cuts Washington had pledged to hit, a U.S. official said Tuesday.

But Trump has said the climate pact, signed by almost 200 countries, would hit the United States with "draconian financial and economic burdens" while competitors got off lightly.

"Right now you have a level of collaboration and focus and sharing of best practices that I haven't seen", he noted.

Boulder County's commissioners - all of whom are Democrats - said in their news release that "Boulder County and other Colorado communities are already feeling the impacts of climate change in the form of reduced snowpack, earlier snowmelt runoff, and more frequent and severe floods, extreme weather events, droughts and wildfires".

"I can't think of any major (US) city that is absent", he said adding that this "is not a partisan issue".

"The Trump administration had better watch out for USA cities", Robertson said.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg also announced a $200 million plan meant to support innovative policies in American cities.

Trump's decision to pull the US out of the Paris climate deal was lambasted by global and domestic leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

More than 1,200 cities and counties have said they will continue to follow the Paris climate goals.President Trump has said the deal would result in lost jobs, lower wages and closed factories around the country.

He vowed during the election campaign to "cancel" the Paris agreement within 100 days of becoming president on January 20 in order to bolster United States oil and coal giant, which bankrolled his campaign.

The European Union made several strong commitments to back up their affirmation of the Paris Climate Agreement, including reaffirming their commitment to fulfilling worldwide climate finance goals, and stepping up cooperation with global partners - most notably, those countries which are deemed most vulnerable to climate change.
