Conference: US mayors may shape national climate policy

Environmentalists Form Giant Human Message Outside Miami Beach Mayor's Meeting Conference: US mayors may shape national climate policy

Former President Bill Clinton is set to talk as hundreds of mayors convene on Miami Beach for the U.S. Conference of Mayors 85th Annual Meeting.

USA mayors meeting in Florida are urging bipartisan, local leadership at a time when many are pushing back against Trump administration policies on climate change and immigration.

Bill Clinton, the former U.S. president, has told mayors that they are the best answer to the divisive politics that has become all too common at the state and national levels in the USA as well as globally.

"You can get out any minute, but water is going to keep rising", Clinton said. "There may be a little bit of a disagreement about how actually to deal with it", said Landrieu, who will replace Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett as conference president this weekend.

"In cities you are comfortable with diversity and more likely to understand that the "us versus them" mentality is a very poor way of thinking", he said.

"We can't ignore climate change because climate change is not ignoring us", said Mayor Biskupski.

Outside the Fontainebleau Hotel, where mayors are meeting, on the streets of Miami Beach, the city has moved aggressively to address a rising sea level, one of the consequences of climate change.

"If the federal government refuses to act or is just paralyzed, the cities themselves, through their mayors, are going to create a new national policy by the accumulation of our individual efforts", he said. "Politics has no influence on science or nature", he quipped. That's the message from the U.S. Conference of Mayors, wrapping up today in Miami Beach.

Rochester Hills Mayor Brian Barnett speaking to WWJ from the conference says their residents trust them to get the job done.

"Mayors sit at the helm of every major policy issue, and put partisan differences aside to produce results for our cities and towns".

Forty-seven cities spent almost $1.2 billion annually on electricity for city operations, and "with this level of purchasing power, coordinated efforts or shifts in demand from USA cities will be of interest to energy utilities and provides", the survey said.

"In San Diego, we brought business and environmental groups together to advance a goal of 100 percent renewable energy", said Mayor Faulconer.

Now, cities large and small are purchasing electric vehicles and buses, buying renewable energy when possible, installing solar panels on municipal buildings, redesigning more walkable neighborhoods, and promoting mass transit.

Mayors from big cities say they fear the increased enforcement will push immigrant communities into the shadows, deterring them to report crimes or cooperate as witnesses. "We could use more of that in state and national government".

It's the first time Miami Beach has hosted the event since 1962.
