As the second instance of reusing one of its rockets, this marks 12 completed landings out of 17 attempts for SpaceX, and the 7th successful recovery at sea, where the rocket's first stage touches down upright on a floating drone platform.

SpaceX successfully launched and landed a Falcon 9 rocket Friday, the first of two launches this weekend.

It was a big weekend for Space X which has successfully launched and landed its Falcon 9 rocket not once but twice over the course of the last three days. Company founder Elon Musk noted that Friday's attempt was one of the most hard recovery efforts, saying the returning rocket "will experience its highest ever re- entry force and heat".

The first 10 Iridium NEXT satellites were sent into a pole-to-pole orbit aboard a two-stage Falcon 9 that was launched in January.

In total SpaceX, which is headed by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, will launch a series of 75 satellites for Iridium's satellite constellation, Iridium NEXT by 2018.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to lift off at 1:25 p.m. PDT Sunday from the coastal base carrying 10 more satellites for Iridium Communications. The satellites were delivered into one of the six orbital pathways used by Iridium, already containing over 60 of the company's communications satellites. Bulgariasat-1 is the first geostationary communications satellite launched for Bulgaria. Among the many technologies enabled by Iridium Next is a hosted payload from Iridium's partner, Aireon, which will provide a real-time, global aircraft surveillance and tracking service.

In both missions, the Falcon first-stages came back to Earth under control, landing on drone ships that had been placed in the ocean. However, he said, he would want to see whether using a reused first-stage would speed up launch dates.

In its short history, SpaceX has gone through some teething problems, with a number of rockets exploding mid-take off or failing to stick the landing. This rocket will be carrying an Iridium communications satellite into orbit.

Sunday's launch marked SpaceX's ninth so far this year.
