John Oliver Takes a Jab at Anti-Vaxxers on Last Week Tonight

Sandy Vega | 27 June, 2017, 02:50

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver airs Sunday at 11pm ET/PT on HBO.

In the latest installment of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver discussed the rise of vaccine skeptics in America and the risky pieces of misinformation that have contributed to the anti-vaccine movement. The host used a clip from CBS News featuring former WCCO anchor Jamie Yuccas as a set up.

Oliver examines the hysteria about vaccines over the course of his in-depth segment, but in the end he makes it personal: "I am someone who is scared of literally everything", he says.

Hold up. Rewind the tape. Garrisons Keillor? (And even then, there's a mercury-free version for the anxious.) Or celebrities like noted not-expert-in-anything Rob Schneider, who, in an interview, claims that government-mandated vaccinations are "against the Nuremberg Laws", a quote from his next role The Annoying Guy Who Is Wrong, according to Oliver.

Ricciardo wins chaotic Azerbaijan GP; Vettel, Hamilton clash
The slowness of the safety vehicle was annoying Hamilton, who complained that he couldn't get enough temperature into his tires. Raikkonen then picked up debris and a puncture to trigger a third safety auto intervention -- after only 20 laps.

Coming up next week: Oliver takes on Als Franken. He argued that people seem to forget how well vaccines work, because people don't bother posting Facebook updates like, "I didn't get polio again today!" "Vaccinations can mean getting injected by a needle filled with science juice". "And we tend not to talk about the very tangible good that they do". "In the Somali community in Minnesota the measles vaccination rate for children dropped to just 42%, and that has some very real consequences", he explained, going on to shed light on the measles outbreak in the community, where the number of people infected exceeds that of the rest of the country combined.

"It is likely that at some point you may hear scary vaccine stories from other parents or on the Internet, and it is hard not to be terrified when you encounter it", he said.

A protective parent of his own prematurely born son, Oliver acknowledged the fears parents have over their children's health. It's also nice to see him take somewhat of a break from Donald Trump, if only to give us a moment to breathe while he prepared his next 20 minute administration bashing. "And if I can resist the temptation to listen to the irrational shouting of my terrified lizard brain, then I believe that everyone can".
