Orlando Vargas | 27 June, 2017, 05:26

The Brian Head wildfire in Utah that has prompted the evacuation of 1,500 people from hundreds of homes and cabins.

Authorities ordered more evacuations at the fire that has torched more than 67 square miles (174 square kilometers) in preparation for winds and low humidity that could push fire growth north after calmer weather kept its growth in check over the weekend.

Firefighters are battling strong winds and the potential for triple-digit temperatures as they try to contain separate wildfires in Utah and California. The fire has also burned in the Dixie National Forest. More evacuations are being ordered at this time.

"This is a catastrophic fire, no two ways about it", Garfield County Sheriff Jim Perkins said.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says the blaze broke out late Monday afternoon and within just a few hours had grown to about 500 acres (200 hectares).

Almost 1,000 firefighters in southern Utah are banking on cooler weather conditions Sunday as they continue to tackle the country's largest wildfire. One structure was destroyed and a television news van had major burn damage. Roughly 1,500 residents have been evacuated since the fire started.

A number of communities in the area were forced to evacuate, including the entire town of Brian Head. Officials have said the blaze near the ski town of Brian Head was sparked June 17 by a weed-burning torch. It intensified over the past week because hot and windy weather conditions fanned the flames. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
